What are the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? Goal 1: No Poverty

The first of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is aimed at ending poverty in all its forms everywhere.

Poverty remains pervasive, with nearly half of the world’s population struggling with its effects. Lack of access to basic necessities like food and clean water continues to claim thousands of lives daily. The goal is to work collectively to address these challenges, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to thrive and lead a productive life.

What does UN SDG 1 include?

According to the United Nations, the targets set forth under Goal 1 of the SDGs provide a framework for action to end poverty:

Eradicate extreme poverty (Target 1.1): By 2030, the aim is to eliminate extreme poverty for all people everywhere, defined as living on less than $1.25 a day.

Reduce poverty by at least 50% (Target 1.2): By 2030, the goal is to halve the proportion of men, women, and children living in poverty across all dimensions, according to national definitions.

Implement social protection systems (Target 1.3): National governments are urged to establish appropriate social protection systems and measures for all individuals, including the poorest and most vulnerable, with the aim of achieving substantial coverage by 2030.

Ensure equal rights (Target 1.4): By 2030, efforts should be made to ensure that all individuals, particularly the poor and vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources, basic services, land ownership, inheritance, technology, and financial services.

Build resilience (Target 1.5): The goal is to enhance the resilience of the poor and vulnerable to environmental, economic, and social disasters, reducing their exposure and vulnerability to climate-related events and other shocks by 2030.

Mobilise resources (Target 1.6): There is a need to significantly increase the mobilisation of resources from various sources, including enhanced development cooperation, to provide adequate means for developing countries, particularly the least developed, to implement poverty eradication programs and policies.

Create pro-poor and gender-sensitive policies (Target 1.7): National, regional, and international policy frameworks should be established based on pro-poor and gender-sensitive development strategies to support increased investment in poverty eradication efforts.

According to the UN, achieving Goal 1 requires concerted efforts to address the root causes of poverty, promote economic empowerment, and ensure access to essential services and resources for all.
