One third of tech engineers would leave their job if their firm didn’t support sustainability

One third (34%) of engineers in the technology sector would leave their job if the company that they worked for didn’t provide opportunities to support sustainable initiatives, a new report from TE Connectivity has found.

TE Connectivity, which produces connectors and sensors for use in the transportation, energy, medical and data centre sectors, surveyed 1,000 executives and engineers in China, Germany, India, Japan and the United States, with the study finding that most engineers revealed a ‘deep passion’ for the environment.

Some 87% of engineers said that it was ‘personally important’ to them to support climate change solutions in their work.

It also found that executives ‘need to do more’ to install confidence in their engineering communities on sustainability matters, as satisfaction levels regarding sustainability efforts differ between engineers and those in higher positions.

Artificial intelligence

Elsewhere, TE Connectivity’s study also found that there is a disconnect between engineers and leaders when it comes to rolling out artificial intelligence solutions – three quarters of executives say that engineers are responsible for driving AI implementation, while 68% of engineers believe that leaders should be laying out a clear path for implementation.

Around four fifths (79%) of both engineers and executives expect their company to invest more in AI training over the next three years.

Significant resources

“TE has devoted significant resources to sustainability and AI, and we know other companies are doing the same,” commented Terrence Curtin, TE Connectivity’s chief executive.

“We wanted to learn more about how these two megatrends are affecting the innovation process and, in turn, how innovation is driving them forward. What we found was that the leaders who set a company’s goals and the engineers tasked with meeting these goals still have some work to do to align for success.”
