“How can I make my business more sustainable?”

That’s a question being asked in boardrooms, at shareholder gatherings and annual general meetings around the world, as the business community seeks to get to grip with why sustainability is important in business, and how to balance sustainability with profitability.

From the team behind 909originals.com and Europe-data.com, SustainabilityOnline.net is a site dedicated to sharing the latest news on ESG initiatives within the business and corporate sector, with a view to fostering positive, profitable change.

We aim to provide current news, insights, and opinions from the business world regarding sustainability in all its various applications. Our goal is to inspire companies to proactively adopt transformative initiatives within their organisations – providing advice on the various tenets that encompass ESG – and address the business community’s environmental sustainability strategy concerns.

But first, it’s worth addressing a few important questions.

Do investors care about sustainability? A recent McKinsey report found that 85% of chief investment officers stated that ESG considerations are an important factor in their investment decisions. It also discovered that a significant majority are willing to pay more for companies that demonstrate a clear connection between their sustainability efforts and financial performance.

But what does sustainability mean in business? While consumers have undoubtedly experienced a global shift to sustainability, a recent study revealed that two thirds of company directors perceive it as having ‘little impact’ on current financial performance. Just 10% anticipate a negative influence on medium- to long-term financial outcomes.

On top of this, just 29% of board directors feel ‘knowledgeable enough’ to effectively question or oversee the implementation of sustainability measures.

Given these findings, there is a pressing need to intensify efforts in encouraging businesses of all scales to integrate sustainability comprehensively across their operations.

Can sustainability be profitable? Businesses around the world are leveraging sustainability not only for environmental and social responsibility but also as a catalyst for enhanced profitability.

And with good reason. Recent studies indicate significant growth is achievable from various sectors linked to sustainability. The alternative protein market is expected to surge by 96% from 2020 to 2025, reaching a value of $68.5 billion. Similarly, clean nutrition is poised for a 66% growth, functional food is projected to increase by 38%, and initiatives focused on reducing food waste are anticipated to grow by 33% during the same period.

This level of clarity is crucial for persuading investors that sustainability goes beyond being a mere ‘nice to have’ and presents a a business approach to creating long term shareholder value from sustainability.
