Goal 5 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals underscores the importance of achieving gender equality as a fundamental aspect of sustainable development.
At its essence, Goal 5 highlights the pervasive impact of gender bias on societies and underscores the need for equal rights and opportunities for all individuals, regardless of gender. Gender equality is not just a matter of human rights; it is essential for unlocking the full potential of individuals and advancing progress for all.
What does UN SDG 5 include?
To achieve this goal, the UN has outlined nine targets that serve as actionable steps towards promoting gender equality:
End Discrimination Against Women and Girls (Target 5.1): Eradicate all forms of discrimination against women and girls, regardless of their location or circumstances.
End All Violence Against and Exploitation of Women and Girls (Target 5.2): Eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls, including trafficking, sexual exploitation, and other forms of abuse.
Eliminate Forced Marriages and Genital Mutilation (Target 5.3): Put an end to harmful practices such as child, early, and forced marriage, as well as female genital mutilation.
Value Unpaid Care and Promote Shared Domestic Responsibilities (Target 5.4): Recognise and value unpaid care and domestic work, promoting shared responsibility within households and families.
Ensure Full Participation in Leadership and Decision-Making (Target 5.5): Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership in all spheres of political, economic, and public life.
Universal Access to Reproductive Health and Rights (Target 5.6): Guarantee universal access to sexual and reproductive health services and rights in accordance with international agreements.
Equal Rights to Economic Resources, Property Ownership, and Financial Services (Target 5.7): Implement reforms to grant women equal rights to economic resources, land ownership, financial services, inheritance, and natural resources.
Promote Empowerment of Women Through Technology (Target 5.8): Utilise enabling technologies, particularly information and communications technology, to promote the empowerment of women.
Adopt and Strengthen Policies and Enforceable Legislation for Gender Equality (Target 5.9): Implement robust policies and enforceable legislation to promote gender equality and empower all women and girls at all levels.
As the United Nations explains, by addressing systemic inequalities, eliminating discriminatory practices, and empowering women and girls, societies can unlock their full potential and build a more equitable and prosperous future for all.
