Packaging giant Ardagh Group has achieved a 25% reduction in Scope 3 emissions in its Ardagh Metal Packaging business, exceeding its 2030 target several years early, it said in its latest Sustainability Report.
The report covers the sustainability performance of the group’s two operating businesses: Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP) and Ardagh Glass Packaging (AGP), outlining progress in areas such as emissions, circularity, water and waste management, and social projects.
Sustainability achievements
At AMP, renewable electricity use rose to 30% globally, with higher usage levels reported in Europe (46%) and South America (43%). AGP achieved 22% renewable electricity use, reaching 48% in Europe.
In terms of emissions, AMP reported a 10% decrease in Scope 1 and 2 emissions between 2023 and 2024, and a 18% decrease since 2020. AGP reported a 12% year-on-year reduction, as well as a 16% decline since 2020.
As well as AMP’s 25% reduction in Scope 3 emissions, AGP also achieved a 10% reduction.
In terms of circularity, meanwhile, AMP’s beverage cans now contain an average of 78% recycled aluminium, which is one of the highest of any manufacturer, while AGP’s glass production used 56% recycled cullet.
Elsewhere, more than four fifths (83%) of AMP facilities achieved Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL), while AGP increased its ZWTL rate to 35%.
‘Meaningful progress’
“Our 2024 Sustainability Report provides detailed insights into our environmental, social and governance performance,” commented Herman Troskie, chair, Ardagh Group. “We continued to make meaningful progress toward our sustainability goals, guided by our Core Values of Inclusion, Trust, Teamwork and Excellence.
“As a leading manufacturer of highly recyclable aluminium and glass packaging, we understand the responsibility we carry – and the opportunity we have – to contribute to a more sustainable future for both the planet and the communities we serve. While our beverage can business delivered strong growth, our glass division navigated a more challenging and dynamic trading environment. Through it all, we remained focused and disciplined, and we continued to invest for a more sustainable future across the Group.”
