eBay has unveiled its first Climate Transition Plan, which sets out how the online platform will seek to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.
The plan will serve as a ‘comprehensive roadmap’, it noted, detailing how eBay will accelerate sustainable commerce, reduce emissions across both its operations and value chain, and achieve its long-term climate commitments.
‘Deeply connected’
“At eBay, we believe the future of commerce and the future of our planet are deeply connected,” commented Renee Morin, eBay’s chief sustainability officer. “Building on our recommerce legacy, our Climate Transition Plan showcases how we will achieve net-zero emissions by 2045 while supporting a low-carbon economy.
“It reflects eBay’s long-standing commitment to climate resiliency, creating enduring value for our customers and community.”
At the core of the group’s strategy is a pathway to achieve both short-term and long-term emissions targets, which has been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This includes a target of reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 90% by 2030, compared with a 2019 baseline, and reducing Scope 3 emissions by 27.5% from its downstream transportation and distribution over the same period.
The company has already reported a 92% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions compared to 2019, while last year, it achieved 100% renewable electricity across its operations.
eBay plans to accelerate collaboration with carriers, suppliers, policymakers, and the ‘eBay community’ to reduce its Scope 3 impact, particularly in areas such as transportation and logistics, where it is seeking to expand its low-carbon delivery options.
Global marketplace
‘As a global marketplace, eBay recognises its responsibility to help shape a more sustainable future and drive a Just Transition to a net-zero economy,’ it said in a statement. ‘The company is committed to leading with high standards for climate action and continues to set, achieve, and evolve ambitious goals that support a greener, decarbonised world while creating lasting value for its stakeholders.’
Earlier this week, eBay announced the expansion of its Circular Fashion Fund across Europe and North America. Read more here.
