Packaging solutions provider IFCO has set a target to help its customers save one million tonnes of carbon emissions per year between now and the end of the decade, following what the company said was a ‘record year of environmental savings’ in 2025.
IFCO made the pledge as part of its 2030 ESG strategy, entitled Thriving with Purpose, in which the group also outlined its intention to accelerate progress in water stewardship, circular materials, and food waste reduction.
‘Measure, verify and deliver’
“At IFCO, sustainability progress is something we measure, verify, and deliver year after year together with our customers,” said Mike Pooley, CEO of IFCO. “Our record 2025 results show that circularity at scale works. The 2030 ESG Goals build on this momentum, setting ambitious but achievable targets that are fully embedded in how we operate and grow our business globally.”
In 2025, customers either avoided or reduced their CO₂e emissions by more than 803 million kilograms through the use of IFCO’s reusable packaging systems, the company said, based on life cycle assessments aligned with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 and reviewed by independent third parties.
In addition, its customers saved more than 56 million cubic metres of water last year, 1.44 million tonnes of solid waste, 74,450 tonnes of produce waste, and 1.6 million gigajoules of energy, equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 798,500 households, it noted.
Three pillars
IFCO‘s 2030 strategy is based around three pillars – business, planet, and society – and as well as efforts to help customers avoid one million tonnes of emissions per year, the company will seek to achieve 100% renewable electricity across key service centre partners and key reusable packaging manufacturers by the end of the decade, and maintain zero waste to landfill through the reuse and upcycling of products at end of life.
It will also continue its work with food banks globally, supporting the delivery of 500,000 tonnes of food by 2030, it noted.
“Our IFCO Thriving with Purpose strategy reflects a broader vision of sustainability,” added Iñigo Canalejo, vice president ESG and strategic marketing at IFCO. “While circularity remains central, our new focus highlights creating shared value for people, communities, and the planet – embedding purpose into everything we do.” Read more here.
