Snacking giant Mars, Incorporated has signed a ‘Renewable Acceleration’ contract with GoldenPeaks Capital, to support its goal of sourcing 100% renewable electricity across its European operations.
The contract with GoldenPeaks Capital in Poland, which Mars described as ‘the largest multi-buyer renewable energy deal in the Central and Eastern Europe region’, includes more than 100 new solar projects, which will come online in 2027 and deliver more than 129MWac of clean energy to Mars, as well as generating around 222 GWh annually, supporting Poland‘s transition away from coal-powered energy.
As well as Mars, Cargill has signed a separate deal with GoldenPeaks Capital to source electricity from the same group of solar farms.
‘Make renewables the standard’
“I’m delighted to see the momentum we are getting with our Renewable Acceleration program,” commented Kevin Rabinovitch, global VP sustainability at Mars. “Building on our recent work with Enel in North America, this next step in Europe clearly demonstrates our vision to make renewables the standard wherever Mars does business.
“It’s unique and significant that one of our largest suppliers, Cargill, is joining us to accelerate the shift to clean energy for our shared supply chains, benefiting the communities we serve. Climate action must be global to be truly effective, and these partnerships show that scale is possible when we all work together.”
Renewable Acceleration
The Renewable Acceleration programme has been developed to increase access to clean power not only for Mars’s company-owned facilities but also for the wider network of suppliers linked to its business.
Mars is seeking to lower its total greenhouse gas emissions by 10% by 2030, with the programme seen as a key element of the company’s goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
“Mars, as a global company with the footprint of a small country, has transformed its global responsibility into an opportunity, driving the process of decarbonisation across its full value chain,” added Adriano Agosti, founder and chairman of GoldenPeaks Capital. “GoldenPeaks Capital is proud to be a partner and play a role to serve this global purpose.” Read more here.
