More than four fifths of new passenger cars in Denmark are electric vehicles

Some 82.9% of new car registrations in Denmark in January were for electric vehicles, with 10,618 EVs registered overall during the month, new data from Mobility Denmark has found.

The strong uptake was driven by the postponement of planned tax increases on electric cars, which had been earmarked to commence at the start of the year. The measure was postponed as part of the Finance Act agreement for 2026.

‘Gaining ground’

“Electric cars are continuously gaining ground in Denmark, and in January we were able to mark another milestone, as there are now more electric cars than diesel cars in the Danish car fleet,” commented Mads Rørvig, CEO of Mobility Denmark.

“This development is, among other things, a result of the fact that it is economically attractive to choose an electric car, and therefore it is very positive for the green transition that there is political will to continue to make it a reality. At the same time, we believe that Denmark is ready for a new car taxation model that more permanently supports green solutions.”

Overall, some 12,803 new passenger cars were registered in Denmark for the month, a 18.2% increase on the previous year – marking a strong start to the year for the automotive market.

“2026 has started positively for the car market, and January shows clear growth compared to last year,” commented Mads Rørvig, CEO of Mobility Denmark. “This is a strong starting point for the coming months, which we look forward to following closely.”

The top-selling car brands in January incuded the the Toyota bZ4X, which saw 1,348 registrations, the Skoda Elroq with 804 registrations, and the Tesla Model Y with 454 registrations.
