Over half of the EU’s electricity came from renewable sources in Q2 2025

More than half (54%) of the European Union's electricity requirements came from renewable energy sources in the second half of this year, new data has shown.

More than half (54%) of the European Union’s electricity requirements came from renewable energy sources in the second half of this year, new data has shown.

According to the Eurostat data, this is up from 52.7% in the corresponding quarter a year earlier.

The biggest contributor to renewable energy generation in the period was solar power, which generated 122,317 gigawatt-hours during the quarter and represented a fifth (19.9%) of the total electricity mix.

June 2025 was the first recorded month in which solar energy outperformed all other energy sources in terms of electricity generation, with a 22% share, putting it ahead of nuclear (21.6%), wind (15.8%), hydro (14.1%) and natural gas (13.8%).

Denmark leads the way

In terms of the EU countries that generate the most electricity from renewable sources, Denmark led the way in the second quarter of this year, with 94.7% renewable electricity generation.

This was followed by Latvia (93.4%), Austria (91.8%), Croatia (89.5%) and Portugal (85.6%), while the lowest share of renewable electricity generation was recorded in Slovakia (19.9%), Malta (21.2%) and Czechia (22.1%), according to Eurostat.

Some 15 EU member states reported an increase in renewable electricity generation in the second quarter, compared to the corresponding period a year earlier, with Luxembourg (+13.5 percentage points) and Belgium (+9.1 percentage points) leading the increase, both due to solar investments.

In percentage terms, solar contributed the largest share of renewable energy generation in the EU in the second quarter, at 36.8%. Wind accounted for 29.5% of renewable electricity, while hydro provided 26.0%. Combustible renewable fuels, including solid, liquid, and gaseous biofuels, made up 7.3%, and geothermal accounted for 0.4%, Eurostat‘s data showed.

The data reflect only electricity generated, rather than gross electricity consumption. Read more here.
