Sports company Puma has said that nine out of every ten products it now produces is made from recycled or certified materials.

The German-headquartered brand made the announcement in its 2024 sustainability report, which also noted the progress the company has made in areas such as circularity, climate and human rights.

Puma set the target of producing nine in ten products from recycled and certified materials in 2021, and has ramped up its activities in this area in the years since – in 2024, PUMA used 13% recycled cotton and approximately 75% recycled polyester fabric in its products.

Some 13.9% of this polyester was derived from the company’s textile-to-textile recycling initiative, RE:FIBRE, which processes industrial and post-consumer waste into new fabric.

‘Ahead of schedule’

“Reaching our goal of 9 out of 10 products one year ahead of schedule is a testament to the great teamwork of everybody involved at Puma and our manufacturing partners,” commented Puma’s chief product officer Maria Valdes. “We will take this momentum and continue to look for ways to reduce our environmental footprint as part of our Vision 2030 sustainability goals.”

Elsewhere, Puma reported a 86% reduction in emissions from its own operations compared to 2017, with the company now powering all offices, stores, and warehouses with renewable electricity. It has also increased its investment in electric vehicles, and unveiled two large solar PV plants in Germany, both at its headquarters and at a major distribution centre (pictured).

Emissions reduction

Puma is aiming for a 90% absolute reduction in emissions from its own operations and a 33% cut in supply chain emissions by 2030, compared to a 2017 baseline.

The company has also advanced its human rights targets, with more than 290,000 factory workers and employees in its supply chain receiving training on sexual harassment, and the average payment for core suppliers rising by 3% last year. Read more here.
