Transport fleets are increasingly using data-driven insights to reduce fuel consumption, improve efficiency and control costs, a new report by Geotab has found.
According to the company’s 2025 Sustainability and Impact Report, Geotab‘s connected transportation, video and asset tracking solutions have enabled fleets around the world to reduce vehicle idling by close to a third, as well as achieving improvements in fuel efficiency and road safety.
‘Fuel volatility’
“Fuel volatility is a reminder that sustainability is a business strategy,” said Neil Cawse, founder and CEO of Geotab. “When integrated with a pragmatic focus on short-term value, sustainability measures can drive both efficiency and profitability. Every operational improvement is an immediate, measurable step toward resilience and growth.”
Connected vehicles, which enable fleets to make more informed decisions about vehicle efficiency, driver behaviour and electrification strategy, are playing a central role in this shift, with Geotab-connected electric vehicles travelling more than 870 million miles last year.
Case studies
The company pointed to some notable case studies – Belgian postal and logistics operator bpost saved €1.6 million in fuel costs by optimising its fleet and charging schedules, while UK-based construction firm Tarmac reduced idling by 30%, as well as improving its fuel economy by 25%.
Elsewhere, Autolinee Federico achieved a 20% fuel reduction in Italy; US-based Richards Building Supply achieved a 41% improvement in safe driving behaviour; and the city of Carmel, Indiana, adopted a custom dashboard to validate emissions reductions from a biodiesel fuel pilot program.
As well as reporting positive customer impact, Geotab also reduced its own Scope 2 emissions by 42.5% year-on-year (and by 87.5% compared to 2019), while Scope 3 emissions were reduced by 14%.
“Geotab’s greatest contribution to sustainability is helping the transportation industry optimise operations,” Cawse added. “Everyday we see businesses reduce fuel use, cut emissions and make more strategic choices around electrification using data and AI insights. But sustainability is a collective effort, so we must also hold ourselves accountable.
“This report highlights both the progress of our customers and the steps we are taking as a company to reduce our own impact.” Read more here.
