Virtual meetings through TeamViewer saved ‘millions of tonnes’ of CO2 in 2022

Virtual meetings carried out through TeamViewer’s remote connectivity platforms reduced the CO2 emissions generated by users by between 15.6 and 44.8 million tonnes in 2022, by reducing the need for travel, the company has said.

The CO2-Avoidance Study was carried out by TeamViewer in association with Five Glaciers Consulting, and was critically reviewed by TÜV SÜD.

In putting together its report, a scenario was devised in consultation with both internal and external experts, which was based on realistic travel assumptions, such as the number of travellers or the chosen mode of transport.

This resulted in CO2 avoidance of 41 million tonnes through the use of TeamViewer’s remote meeting solutions, which was equivalent to approximately 42,000 roundtrip flights from London to Tokyo in a Boeing 777-300ER, or around ten times the emissions of the waste management sector in Germany, the company said.

The study utilised TeamViewer’s connection data from 2022, along with a customer and user survey involving approximately 850 qualified participants.

Remote access

“TeamViewer solutions have become instrumental in facilitating remote access, support, and control across various industries,” commented Alexander Gührer, director sustainability and procurement at TeamViewer.

“By enabling users to troubleshoot IT equipment, steer machinery, and provide remote assistance, TeamViewer helps to significantly avoid carbon emissions associated with travel. At the same time, we ensure that these remote connections are secure, and that critical data is protected.”

Emissions reduction

Elsewhere, TeamViewer said that it is ‘continuously working on reducing its own emissions, to achieve a net-zero target by 2040 and to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50% by 2030, based on a 2021 baseline.

“In addition to empowering users and customers to avoid carbon emissions, we are constantly working on minimising our own environmental impact,” Gührer added. “We are committed to driving sustainable practices across our operations every day.”
