Northern regions of the European Union boast a higher-than-average share of electric passenger cars, new data from Eurostat has found.
The Dutch region of Flevoland, east of the capital, Amsterdam, reported the largest share of electric vehicles in the EU in 2024, with EVs accounting for 22.1% of all passenger cars, a five-percentage-point increase on the previous year.
Other regions to boast notable EV shares include Stockholm in Sweden, where 14.4% of all passenger cars are electric, Hovedstaden in Denmark (13.3%), Prov. Vlaams-Brabant in Belgium (12.9%) and Midtjylland, also in Denmark (12.6%).
Only four additional EU regions reported EV passenger car shares above 10%, including Sjælland (11.6%), Syddanmark (11.0%) and Nordjylland (10.2%) in Denmark, and Utrecht in the Netherlands (10.7%), the data showed.
Utility vehicles
If utility vehicles, including lorries, trucks and other special vehicles, are included, the data shows a different pattern, with Valle d’Aosta in Italy, close to the borders with Switzerland and France, boasting the highest share of electric vehicles in the EU, at 22.0%.
Other regions to report a high share of electric utility vehicles include Prov. West-Vlaanderen in Belgium (20.5%), the Northern and Western region in Ireland (20%) and Guyane in France (20%).
Of the top 15 EU regions with the highest share of utility vehicles, four were located in Finland, three in Belgium and two in Spain. One region each was located in Ireland and Cyprus.

‘The share of utility vehicles depends on several indicators, for example, the regional transport systems and related infrastructure for different modes of freight transport, such as the capacity of motorways, railway lines, ports and airports,’ Eurostat noted.
‘The economic characteristics of a region also play a role, i.e. whether the regional economy is dominated by manufacturing industries or services, and whether the region is located on key European freight corridors.’ Read more here.
