The Consumer Goods Forum‘s Climate Transition Coalition, which includes member companies such as Ahold Delhaize, PepsiCo and Unilever, has launched a new Supplier Decarbonisation Playbook.
The playbook, which was unveiled during Climate Week in New York, aims to support suppliers in both reducing emissions and advancing their sustainability targets across their global value chains. The development of the playbook was supported by technical experts and partner organisations including Boston Consulting Group (BCG).
Concrete action
“The Supplier Decarbonisation Playbook is about translating our collective ambition into concrete action,” commented Sharon Bligh, director of the Climate Transition Coalition at The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF).
“Our role is to provide suppliers with the clarity and resources they need to make meaningful progress. By working together, we can build more resilient value chains and contribute to a net zero future.”
The playbook sets out clear guidance, key actions and best practices across several core sustainability dimensions, including emissions measurement and reduction, renewable electricity and heat, deforestation-free and conversion-free sourcing, and regenerative agriculture.
This ‘practical framework for suppliers to begin or accelerate their decarbonisation journeys’ is aligned with internationally recognised standards including the GHG Protocol, the Science Based Targets initiative, and the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).
Case studies
It also features a number of case studies, including efforts by IKEA to improve HVAC energy efficiency at two Spanish stores; Walmart’s Project Gigaton, which has engaged more than 5,900 suppliers in energy efficiency initiatives; and Woolworths’ investment of more than $77 million in energy upgrades, which has yielded a 42% reduction in direct emissions since 2015.
“Suppliers are at the heart of the consumer goods value chain,” added Archana Jagannathan, chief sustainability officer, PepsiCo Europe, and co-chair of the CGF’s Climate Transition Coalition.
“This Playbook gives them the guidance they need to measure, manage, and reduce emissions — and ultimately accelerate progress towards a 1.5°C future. It is an important tool to drive pre-competitive collaboration, share knowledge, and support suppliers in making measurable progress on climate action.”
