Loop Industries, a maker of polyester resin made entirely from textile waste, has signed a multi-year offtake agreement with sportswear brand Nike.
Under the terms of the deal, Loop will supply its ‘Twist’-branded circular polyester resin to the sportswear giant, establishing Nike as the anchor customer for its Infinite Loop India manufacturing facility, a joint venture between Loop Industries and Ester Industries.
Circular fashion
“We are very proud to have Nike as our anchor customer; this agreement is a major milestone for Loop Industries and for Infinite Loop India,” commented Daniel Solomita, founder and chief executive of Loop Industries.
“The commitment from this iconic global brand is a powerful validation of our strategy to provide a verifiable textile-to-textile polyester resin and advancing circular fashion for our apparel customers.”
All products made using Twist are fully traceable through Loop’s proprietary chemical tracer technology, and will replace the use of virgin and recycled flake polyester across Nike’s product lines.
In addition, the new facility in India is expected to deliver significant environmental savings compared to a traditional fossil-fuel based polyester manufacturing facility, with an 81% reduction in emissions, and annual savings of up to 418,600 tonnes of CO2 emisisons.
Sustainable materials
Sitora Muzafarova, vice president of Nike’s Materials Supply Chain, said that the collaboration supports Nike’s approach to integrating sustainable materials into its manufacturing processes.
“Our agreement with Loop Industries marks a pivotal step toward transforming textile waste into high-performance materials,” she commented. “This partnership exemplifies our commitment to scaling sustainable solutions that deliver both environmental impact and product excellence.”
Elsewhere, Arvind Singhania, chairman of Ester Industries Limited, said that it is a “privilege to partner with Nike in advancing their global sustainability ambitions. This partnership reflects the trust and confidence leading multinational brands place in our ability to deliver verifiable, high-performance recycled materials at scale.”
Loop Industries owns patented and proprietary technology that depolymerises no- and low-value waste PET plastic and polyester fibre, including plastic bottle packaging and textiles such as carpets and clothing, into ‘Loop’ and ‘Twist’ branded PET resin suitable for use in food-grade packaging and polyester fibre.
