Syngenta is aiming to become a ‘global leader’ in biologicals – sustainable solutions for farmers – as it accelerates its rollout of nature-inspired, science-based biological solutions.

The Basel, Switzerland-based business said that its Syngenta Biologicals division reported ‘strong’ Q1 results, driven by a strong performance in North America and China.

Market activity

At the end of 2024, Syngenta announced the acquisition of Intrinsyx Bio, a California-based start-up specialising in the development of nutrient-use efficiency products, while in early 2025, it concluded the integration of the Novartis’ Strains and Natural Products Collection, a repository of natural compounds and genetic strains for agricultural use.

Elsewhere, earlier this year, it opened a 22,000-square-metre biologicals facility in Orangeburg, South Carolina, which will be capable of producing 16,000 tonnes of biostimulants annually.

‘Next generation of biologicals’

“With our recent partnerships and acquisitions and extended manufacturing capacities, Syngenta is positioning itself as the leader in biologicals,” commented Jonathan Brown, global head, Biologicals & Seedcare. “Our scientific expertise is at the forefront of our research and development efforts to provide farmers with the next generation of biologicals, helping them transition towards more sustainable farming practices, such as regenerative agriculture.

The global biologicals market is growing at around 10% CAGR, and is projected to reach close to $20 billion by 2030, according to estimates.

The biologicals market can be categorised into three main categories – biocontrols, naturally derived products for managing pests, diseases, and weeds; biostimulants, products that enhance natural plant processes to improve abiotic stress tolerance and crop quality; and Nutrient Use Efficiency (NUE) products, substances and microorganism that improve macro- and micronutrient availability and uptake.

According to Syngenta, its biologicals pipeline boasts ‘multiple candidates demonstrating strong commercial potential’, with projected annual sales of more than $100 million. Read more here.
