TUI Group significantly increases use of sustainable aviation fuel

Tourism operator TUI Group has significantly increased its use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) across its airline network, using some 11,262 tonnes of SAF last year.

Tourism operator TUI Group has significantly increased its use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) across its airline network, using some 11,262 tonnes of SAF last year. This compares to 1,700 tonnes in 2024, the airline said.

The group’s SAF initiative is part of its broader global sustainability strategy, which targets emissions reductions across its airline, hotel and cruise operations, with a goal of achieving net zero by 2050.

Reducing emissions

“Sustainable aviation fuel is one of the most effective measures to reduce emissions from aviation in the short and medium term,” said Mikkel Hansen, communications manager and head of government relations for TUI Group in the Nordics. “We focus our efforts where it has the greatest impact, and increased use of SAF is an important tool to reduce emissions.”

Aside from increased SAF use, the tour operator is placing increasingly strict demands on the suppliers and partners it works with, to ensure compliance with sustainability goals.

Other initiatives

Elsewhere, in its cruise line division, last year TUI Cruises carried out its first bunkering with liquid biogas (Bio-LNG) on its ‘Mein Schiff Relax’ vessel, using approximately 1,875 cubic meters. Absolute CO₂e emissions from cruise operations have been reduced by 5.5% compared with 2019, the group noted.

Other initiatives being undertaken by the group include the rollout of 100% electric vehicles across its company fleet in Menorca, and more than a third its hotels now producing their own renewable energy.

TUI Group, which is listed on the stock exchange in Germany, operates more than 400 hotels, 17 cruise ships and five airlines, including more than 100 aircraft. Globally, TUI employs more than 60,000 people and serves over 20 million customers annually, and boasts a turnover of more than €20 billion. While it primarily focuses on package holidays, the group is also involved in ski holidays, self-drive holidays and excursions. Read more here.
