Wolt has announced two separate partnerships, with EIT Food and the European Federation of Food Banks (FEBA), through which the online delivery firm will seek to ‘advance sustainable and inclusive food systems’.

As the company’s global head of sustainability, Jamieson Saab, noted, the partnerships expand the group’s “efforts beyond packaging and emissions, and focusing on tangible, systemic change — from tackling food waste and food insecurity to driving greater transparency across our ecosystem.”

EIT Food

Its partnership with EIT Food, a European Union co-funded food innovation initiative, will see it introduce more sustainable packaging solutions as well as tackle food waste, advancing innovation and delivering practical solutions to current food system challenges.

“Together with Wolt, we aim to drive collaboration and deliver real solutions to some of the most pressing food system challenges,” added Katarzyna Sypniewska from EIT Food.

European Federation of Food Banks

Elsewhere, alongside FEBA, which supports a network of more than 30 national food banks across Europe, Wolt will explore ways to redirect surplus food more efficiently, minimise food waste, and strengthen food assistance systems, such as the development of a ‘virtual food bank’.

As Wolt noted, close to 38 million people in the EU currently face food insecurity.

“Supporting local food banks is a natural fit for us,” Saab commented.” This partnership enables us to use our platform and technology to channel surplus food to where it’s needed most — and to give our customers the opportunity to contribute meaningfully along the way.”

He added that Wolt sees both partnerships as long-term commitments rather than one-off campaigns, and the company is aiming to bring “meaningful, scalable innovation to how Europe’s food system operates — from farm to fork, and everything in between.”

Wolt, based in Helsinki, operates its delivery platform in over 30 countries and more than 1,000 cities. Read more here.
