What are the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? Goal 4: Quality Education

Goal 4 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals emphasises the critical role of education in fostering inclusive societies, driving economic growth, and advancing sustainable development.

At its core, Goal 4 underscores the transformative power of education in empowering individuals, fostering social inclusion, and driving economic prosperity. Education serves as a fundamental human right and a key catalyst for personal growth, societal progress, and sustainable development.

What does UN SDG 4 include?

To achieve this goal, the United Nations has outlined ten targets that serve as actionable steps towards ensuring quality education worldwide:

Free Primary and Secondary Education (Target 4.1): By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys complete free, equitable, and quality primary and secondary education, leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes.

Equal Access to Quality Pre-Primary Education (Target 4.2): By 2030, ensure that all children have access to quality early childhood development, care, and pre-primary education, preparing them for primary education.

Equal Access to Affordable Technical, Vocational, and Higher Education (Target 4.3): By 2030, ensure equal access for all individuals to affordable and quality technical, vocational, and tertiary education, including university.

Increase the Number of People with Relevant Skills for Financial Success (Target 4.4): By 2030, substantially increase the number of youth and adults equipped with relevant skills for employment, decent jobs, and entrepreneurship.

Eliminate All Discrimination in Education (Target 4.5): By 2030, eliminate gender disparities in education and ensure equal access to all levels of education and vocational training for vulnerable populations, including persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, and children in vulnerable situations.

Universal Literacy and Numeracy (Target 4.6): By 2030, ensure that all youth and a significant proportion of adults achieve literacy and numeracy.

Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship (Target 4.7): By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including education for sustainable development, human rights, gender equality, peace promotion, and appreciation of cultural diversity.

Build and Upgrade Inclusive and Safe Schools (Target 4.8): Construct and upgrade education facilities that are sensitive to the needs of children, disabilities, and genders, providing safe, inclusive, and effective learning environments for all.

Expand Higher Education Scholarships for Developing Countries (Target 4.9): By 2020, substantially increase the availability of scholarships for students from developing countries, particularly least developed countries, small island developing States, and African nations, to enrol in higher education programs.

Increase the Supply of Qualified Teachers in Developing Countries (Target 4.A): By 2030, significantly enhance the recruitment and training of qualified teachers, particularly in developing countries, through international cooperation and support for teacher training programs.

As the UN puts it, by prioritising access to quality education and addressing the diverse needs of learners worldwide, we can empower individuals, strengthen communities, and build a more prosperous and equitable future for all.
