Tetra Pak has outlined some of the sustainability achievements it has made in its US and Canada operations over the past year, supplementing the packaging firm’s recently published 2024 Sustainability Report.

Among the initiatives is the launch of UPFACTORY California, a new recycling facility that will recycle some 1.5 million lbs of carton material each month, turning it into sustainable building materials.

The company has also rolled out Tetra Pak Direct UHT in the US and Canada, a process that will enable it to ‘maximise process efficiency and flexibility while reducing energy and water usage’, the company said. It will save around 6% of the fresh water needed during production, compared to traditional processes.

Elsewhere, Tetra Pak has increased production capacity at its Denton, Texas, converting factory, and has ramped up investment in its Core Wellbeing employee wellness programme, as well as ElevateHER, its employee resource group to support and connect women in the workplace.

‘Resolute commitment’

“Our resolute commitment to sustainability remains our North Star,” commented Seth Teply, president and CEO, Tetra Pak US and Canada.

“It’s in that commitment where our true purpose lies. We commit to making food safe and available, everywhere, and we promise to protect what’s good for food, people and the planet.”

Emissions reduction

In its 2024 Sustainability Report, Tetra Pak said that it has achieved a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain since 2019, including a five-percentage-point improvement compared to 2023. Within its own operations, the company has achieved a 54% reduction in emissions since 2019 and now sources 94% of its energy from renewable sources. These measures mean that the company is on course to reach net-zero emissions in its own operations by 2030, it said.

‘Moreover, these environmental achievements go hand in hand with the company’s continuous efforts to improve livelihoods and strengthen economies through the delivery of safe food everywhere,’ the company noted. Read more here.
