The Brazilian government, along with representatives from the hotel sector in Belém, have signed an agreement pledging to avoid ‘abusive’ hotel and accommodation prices for the duration of the COP30 climate change conference later this year.
The signing of the Conduct Adjustment Agreement (TAC) will ‘guarantee a balance’ in accommodation prices during COP30, which takes place in Belém in November 2025.
Global gathering
Belém is set to welcome thousands of visitors for the event, including government leaders, international delegations, media representatives, NGOs, and civil society organisations. To date, online booking websites such as Booking.com have displayed exorbitant rates for accommodation during the conference, which the new TAC aims to address. New accommodation is also being constructed for the event.
“Not all countries and delegations can afford some of the prices that have been announced,” commented Minister of the Office of the Chief of Staff, Rui Costa. “We want to welcome everyone and make it possible for everyone to come to COP30 and return home with a good experience. This is good for the sector, for Belém and Brasil”.
‘Biggest and best’
His words were echoed by Brazil’s Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino, who said that he was confident that COP30 would be the “biggest and best” COP to date.
“But we need to find a balance in the relationship between all the stakeholders,” he noted. “The Ministry of Tourism will use all the tools at its disposal to ensure that prices are balanced and that abuses are avoided.”
The agreement also involves the Ministry of Justice, National Consumer Secretariat, and the Belém hotel sector, as well as various accommodation platforms. The TAC was agreed upon at a meeting led by the Ministry of Tourism and the Extraordinary Secretariat for COP30/Office of the Chief of Staff on 16 April. Read more here.
