The COP30 presidency has announce that pre-COP meetings will take place in Brasilia on 13 and 14 October, gathering climate ministers to promote several core agreements for COP30, taking place in Brazil in November.

Between 30 and 50 international delegations are set to participate in the pre-COP, which is traditionally scheduled a month before the annual climate change conference, which this year takes place in Belém.

Some 800 participants are expected to attend, including observer representatives from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The pre-COP meetings are one of a series of gatherings throughout the year in the run-up to the climate conference, along with the Petersberg Climate Dialogue in Berlin in March and the Copenhagen Climate Ministerial in May. Read more here.

Hotel room expansion

Elsewhere, COP30 has confirmed that more than 36,000 beds are currently available for the November summit, of which 14,000 are located in the capital’s hotel network.

Vacation rentals, such as those through Airbnb, account for the highest proportion of these – with 15,256 beds – while cruise ships, contracted by Brazil’s federal government, will account for a further 6,000.

Close to 10,000 beds are currently in development, which will include new hotels under the Vila Líderes, Tivoli and Vila Galé chains, along with converted schools, military lodgings and religious spaces.

As well as Belém, accommodation will be located in the metropolitan region, covering cities such as Ananindeua, Barcarena, and Castanhal. Brazil’s government plans to launch a web platform in the coming weeks to manage reservations and monitor prices.

“It is crucial that these and other initiatives are being developed,” commented Valter Correia, COP30 extraordinary secretary. “We have made significant progress in what we believe we can do together and by mutual agreement, within a preventive logic, to make one of the best COPs ever possible.” Read more here.
