ENGIE has said that recent growth in its European BESS portfolio has taken its global storage capacity to 10.7GW, either in operation or under construction.
ENGIE added 1.1GW/3.3GWh of battery energy storage capacity across seven European countries during July and August, with the firm now boasting a total of 4.7GW of storage capacity in Europe. The United States accounts for 4.4GW of capacity.
By the end of the decade, ENGIE has set a target of achieving 95GW of installed renewable and storage capacity across its global operations.
‘Scale and diversification’
“Surpassing 10 GW of storage capacity worldwide marks an important milestone for ENGIE and reflects the scale and diversification of our flexibility platform,” commented Pedro Vasconcelos, ENGIE executive vice president in charge of Renewable & Flexible Power.
“As renewable energy expands, storage is confirming its role as a key source of flexibility, reliability and system value. The progress achieved across Europe this summer demonstrates our ability to originate, develop and deliver storage assets at scale while supporting the transition to a more resilient, competitive and decarbonised energy system.”
European capacity
In terms of recent European capacity additions, Poland has emerged as a key market for ENGIE, with the firm establishing a portfolio of 758MW/2,156MWh over the past two months, through recent acquisitions.
In Romania, ENGIE acquired a ready-to-build project in Călan, which is expected to enter operation in 2029, while in Spain, it took on a battery project in Tarifa, to build on its separate assets in the same city.
The company also announced progress on projects in Portugal, Scotland and the Netherlands – in the latter, it inaugurated a new BESS project in Lelystad in June, its first such facility in the country.
