The introductory report from the Just Transition Commission, which calls for an ambitious strategy for Ireland to transition to a climate-neutral economy, is a “really important step” in accelerating the country’s climate efforts, Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment Darragh O’Brien has said.
Minister O’Brien was commenting after the Commission emphasised the need to make the transition to climate neutrality a national priority in the years to come – to date, the just transition has largely been associated with the Midlands and the shift away from peat-based industries.
‘Huge opportunity’
“There is no doubt that we are facing many challenges as a government and society, but we also have a huge opportunity,” he said. “We need to proactively listen to our people, our communities, our businesses, especially those most vulnerable and at risk.
“We need to better understand what particular challenges sectors of our society are faced with, and to put in place the right plans and measures to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive instead of being left behind.”
Engaged and committed
The Commission has urged the need for a constructive approach to ensure that different sectors, communities and groups are engaged with and committed to the just transition, which will require ‘strengthened governance for effective implementation’.
The report suggests building on the National Dialogue on Climate Action programme by improving accessibility, affordability, and accountability.
It also called for the need to establish indicators to support the monitoring and evaluation of Ireland’s progress in this area, and ensure that it accounts for those most affected or vulnerable to the transition.
O’Brien added that he met with Commission chair Ali Sheridan recently, and “I know that as a public voice and ear, the entire Commission are fully committed to learning directly from those most impacted. I am listening and learning too and looking forward to proactively driving a just transition, supported by the informed advice of the Commission.”
Established in 2024, the Just Transition Commission is an independent advisory group focused on supporting Ireland’s move towards a fair and effective response to climate change. It serves as both a public voice for the just transition, but also a ‘public ear’, learning directly from those on the frontlines of change. Read more here.
