The ‘most reliable’ electric car is the Honda Insight, given its low risk of major repairs over a ten-year lifespan, and strong long-term cost performance, a new study has found.
The study assessed the most reliable electric vehicles in terms of a number of parameters, including average repair costs, the probability of major repairs, NHTSA safety rankings, and electric driving range, from which a ‘reliability score’ was calculated.
Topping the list
Honda Insight topped the list with a reliability score of 87.83, followed closely by Toyota Prius, with a reliability score of 87.45 – with Toyota boasting lower average repair costs over a ten-year period.
In third place is Subaru XV Crosstrek, with a reliability score of 87.12, with Nissan Leaf placing fourth, with a score of 86.91, and boasting the lowest repair costs of all cars in the study.
Fifth place goes to Chevrolet Bolt EV, which boasts one of the longest electric driving ranges in the study – of 420 kilometres – and a reliability score of 86.58. However, repair costs are slightly higher than the Leaf.
The remainder of the top ten is comprised of Chevrolet Volt (6th, 85.76), Ford Mustang Mach-E (7th, 84.92), Tesla Model 3 (8th, 84.37), Tesla Model Y (9th, 84.21) and Hyundai Ioniq (10th, 83.66).
The information about each model was taken from public reports, including NHTSA and EV databases.
Cost advantage
“Hybrid systems continue to dominate when it comes to reliability, and the data shows a clear cost advantage over fully electric platforms—especially over a 10-year period,” a spokesperson for casinoofthekings.ca, which undertook the study, commented.
“What stands out is that electric range isn’t strongly linked to long-term durability, which is something many buyers may overlook when choosing an EV.” Read more here.
