Edinburgh startup develops ‘smart’ plastic that breaks down in the sea

The environmental risk from plastic pollution is well documented

E.V.A. Biosystems, a startup launched by the University of Edinburgh, has developed a ‘smart’ plastic that breaks down in the ocean, leaving no microplastics or harmful residues.

The innovation, which earned the top prize in the Net Zero category at this year’s Converge Awards, sees special bacteria added to conventional plastics, which can detect when they are in a seawater environment, and activate enzymes that break down the plastic.

Plastic pollution ‘struggle’

“We’re all struggling with plastic pollution, and while there are many people developing biodegradable plastics, they’re too expensive and only make up about 1% of the world’s plastic,” commented Dr. Alexander Speakman, founder of E.V.A. Biosystems.

“Our technology works with existing plastics, making them ‘smart’ enough to break down when they end up where they shouldn’t be, like in our oceans or landfills.”

As the startup notes, its solution is a more eco-friendly alternative to chemical degradation, which can create harmful microplastics, and increase packaging waste.

In winning the award, E.V.A. Biosystems was awarded £30,000 in cash and £19,500 in business support, while it also received the IBioIC Award, which provided an additional £20,000 for the University of Edinburgh.

The Converge Awards also highlighted other innovative projects, including Ujamaa Spice, which works directly with farmers in Zanzibar; SEASAT, which uses satellite imagery to monitor coastal water conditions for the aquaculture industry; SolarSub, which seeks to boost solar panel efficiency; and PalmAlt, a developer of palm oil alternatives.

Adam Kosterka, executive director of Converge, described these solutions as “shining examples of how academic brilliance can lead to groundbreaking solutions with global potential. These companies are not just creating products; they’re shaping a more sustainable and inclusive future for Scotland and beyond.
