Norway leads the charge for electric vehicle use in Europe

Norway is the country with the highest electric vehicle use in Europe, with just over a fifth (20.12%) of all vehicles in the country being electric, a new study has found.

The study, by electronic registration portal Vignettecroatia.com, utilised Eurostat data to determine which European countries had the highest percentage of electric vehicles.

Norway has 3,018,728 registered vehicles, of which 607,516 are electric, putting it well ahead in first place.

Best of the rest

Denmark, with 2,801,076 registered vehicles in total, of which 112,674 are EVs – 4.02% – ranks some way behind in second, with Sweden in third, on 3.97%.

In fourth place is The Netherlands, 3.7% of all vehicles in the nation being electric, while Luxembourg is fifth, with 3.13% electric vehicles.

Rounding off the top ten are Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and the UK.

Improving technology

“While electric cars are more common and affordable than ever, they still are an expensive purchase at a minimum for a lot of Europe,” commented Luka Stojčević, a spokesperson for Vignettecroatia.com. “Even some of Europe’s highest income countries, as seen in this list, still see electric vehicles as a rarity compared to other fuel types.

“However, as technology improves and overall production becomes cheaper, we can expect this list to shuffle around as more countries buy into the market.”

The methodology for this study involved sourcing 2022-registered vehicle data from Eurostat for all types of vehicles across various countries, as well as the number of registered electric vehicles per country was identified. By combining these figures, the percentage of registered electric vehicles in each country was calculated. Following this, a ranking was established.
