Some 1.8 million electric vehicles were sold globally in November 2024, a new record month for EV sales, according to new data from Rho Motion.

The research firm noted that global EV sales in the year to date (January to November 2024) totalled 15.2 million, a 25% increase on the previous year.

November 2024 broke the previous record, which was set in October 2024, by around 100,000 units.

China, the biggest market for EVs globally, accounted for 1.3 million units sold in November, surpassing its previously-set record in October by more than 50,000 units.

In the year to date, China has sold some 9.7 million electric vehicles, a 40% increase on the corresponding period a year earlier. In Europe (including the European Free Trade Association countries and the UK), sales totalled 2.7 million, a 3% decline, while in the USA and Canada, sales were 1.6 million, a 10% increase.

In the rest of the world, meanwhile, sales of 1.1 million were 25% higher than the previous year, an indication of rising global demand for sustainable transport networks.

‘Record-breaking month’

“This quarter has picked up significantly for EV sales globally as we see record-breaking month after record-breaking month,” commented Rho Motion data manager, Charles Lester.

“However, the regional picture is somewhat uneven, with Europe shrinking 3% this year so far, and once more China accounts for over two thirds of the electric vehicles sold in November.”

UK sales boost

Looking at some of the specific nuances of the various markets, in Europe the UK has seen a resurgence in EV sales, with sales up 17% in the year to date, driven by government policies, although Germany, France, and Italy continue to underperform.

Also, in the USA and Canada, anticipation over a rolling back of the Biden-era EV tax credit by president-elect Donald Trump has led to a surge in sales. Elsewhere, the entry of Tesla’s Cybertruck into the Canadian market has bolstered sales there. Read more here.
