Thai Union, a seafood producer behind the John West and King Oscar brands, has joined two global environmental initiatives, Ocean Breakthroughs and Transforming our Food Systems, as part of its commitment to sustainable practices and responsible resource management.
The group became a signatory to these initiatives during the COP28 conference in Dubai held in November and December 2023.
‘A significant milestone’
Commenting, Adam Brennan, chief sustainability officer, Thai Union Group, said, “Thai Union’s support of these critical calls to action marks a significant milestone in our sustainability journey.
“These initiatives represent an important step in addressing two of the most pressing environmental challenges facing our planet, and becoming a signatory underscores Thai Union’s commitment to playing a leading role towards a more sustainable and resilient future.”
The Ocean Breakthroughs initiative, led by the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions, aims to leverage the ocean’s potential to contribute up to 35% of the required greenhouse gas emissions reductions by 2050.
The Transforming our Food Systems initiative, meanwhile, advocates for a resilient, fair, and sustainable transformation of food systems, addressing challenges associated with climate change, biodiversity loss, and unsustainable practices in global food and agriculture.
A sustainable future
“These commitments are also in line with Thai Union’s vision of a sustainable future where the ocean continues to be a source of life and livelihood for millions of people around the world,” added Brennan. “Through our SeaChange 2030 sustainability strategy, we aim to contribute significantly to global efforts in combating climate change and promoting sustainable food systems. It is a responsibility we take seriously as a leader in the seafood industry.”
Thai Union’s SeaChange 2030 sustainability strategy seeks to achieve a 42% reduction in Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and net zero by 2050, as well as outlining a THB 250 million investment towards protecting and restoring critical ecosystems. In total, 11 interconnected goals form part of the strategy.
