What Are The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Goal 16 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is dedicated to Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, aiming to promote peaceful and inclusive societies, ensure access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels.

This Goal addresses various aspects of societal well-being and governance, recognising that peace and stability are essential prerequisites for progress in other areas.

What does UN SDG 16 include?

The targets outlined under Goal 16 include the following:

Reduce violence everywhere (Target 16.1): Efforts should be made to significantly reduce all forms of violence and related death rates worldwide.

Protect children from abuse, exploitation, trafficking, and violence (Target 16.2): It is crucial to end abuse, exploitation, trafficking, and all forms of violence against children.

Promote the rule of law and ensure equal access to justice (Target 16.3): The rule of law must be upheld at both national and international levels, ensuring that everyone has equal access to justice.

Combat organised crime and illicit financial and arms flows (Target 16.4): By 2030, significant reductions should be made in illicit financial and arms flows, and efforts should be intensified to combat organised crime.

Substantially reduce corruption and bribery (Target 16.5): Corruption and bribery in all their forms must be substantially reduced to ensure fair and transparent governance.

Develop effective, accountable, and transparent institutions (Target 16.6): Institutions at all levels should be developed to be effective, accountable, and transparent in their operations.

Ensure responsive, inclusive, and representative decision-making (Target 16.7): Decision-making processes should be responsive, inclusive, participatory, and representative at all levels of governance.

Strengthen participation in global governance (Target 16.8): Efforts should be made to broaden and strengthen the participation of developing countries in global governance institutions.

Provide universal legal identity (Target 16.9): By 2030, legal identity, including birth registration, should be provided to all individuals.

Ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms (Target 16.A): Public access to information should be ensured, and fundamental freedoms should be protected in accordance with national legislation and international agreements.

Strengthen national institutions to prevent violence and combat terrorism and crime (Target 16.B): Relevant national institutions, particularly in developing countries, should be strengthened to prevent violence and combat terrorism and crime through international cooperation.

Promote and enforce non-discriminatory laws and policies (Target 16.C): Non-discriminatory laws and policies should be promoted and enforced to ensure sustainable development for all.

According to the United Nations, by working towards these targets, countries can create more peaceful, just, and inclusive societies, fostering conditions conducive to sustainable development and well-being for all.
