Data centre giant Equinix has signed a new renewable energy Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Flo Energy Singapore, which will provide at least 11.5MWp of renewable energy capacity to its facilities in Singapore.

It’s the fourth such agreement that Equinix has signed in the past two years, and includes an option for the digital infrastructure firm to expand the capacity to up to 50MWp over time.

With the latest agreement, the company expects its local renewable energy portfolio in Singapore to reach 215MWp by 2028, with its agreements expected to collectively generate around 250,000MWh of electricity annually.

‘Built for the future’

“Singapore’s position as a trusted global AI and digital hub will be underpinned by digital infrastructure that is resilient, sustainable and built for the future,” commented Yee May Leong, managing director, Singapore, Equinix.

“Our fourth PPA is a significant milestone that reflects the power of collaboration across Singapore’s public and private sectors. As demand for digital infrastructure continues to accelerate, Equinix remains committed to supporting Singapore’s position as a global digital hub while advancing the nation’s sustainability goals.”

The agreement with Flo also expands Equinix’s participation in Singapore’s private-sector renewable energy market, complementing its existing renewable energy agreements and initiatives, such as SolarNova 7 and the JTC Jurong Island programme.

‘A new phase’

Soon Chen Kang, senior research analyst at 451 Research, part of S&P Global Market Intelligence, added that Singapore’s data centre sector is “entering a new phase”, with energy availability and sustainability considerations gaining in strategic importance.

“Equinix’s latest agreement highlights how operators are diversifying their renewable energy sourcing models and collaborating with a wider ecosystem of partners,” she said. “In a market shaped by land and grid constraints, multi-stakeholder approaches will play a critical role in supporting the continued growth and decarbonisation of digital infrastructure.”

Equinix is also the first customer to avail of Flo’s newly launched Data Centre Solutions package, which provides options including fixed-price contracts, progressive purchasing, structured derivatives, Renewable Energy Certificate matching and PPAs. The package is also available to data centre operators in Australia.

Including this latest agreement, Equinix now has more than 1,490MW of wind and solar PPAs under contract across 11 countries. Read more here.
