Swedish health and hygiene firm Essity has been named on the global non-profit environmental organisation CDP’s ‘A List’, which the company says underpins its corporate transparency and climate leadership.
“The recognition from CDP shows Essity’s commitment to become net zero by 2050 and our engagement in the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) since 2017,” commented Sahil Tesfu, Essity’s chief strategy officer, group function Strategy and Sustainability.
“Improving the lives of over a billion people who use our products and services every day can only happen with a strong focus on sustainability.”
Value chain decarbonisation
Essity’s net zero targets involve full value chain decarbonisation, from raw material sourcing to product use and disposal, the company said, with the Stockholm-based firm currently involved in several projects as it seeks to reduce emissions.
The company has turned to renewable energy sources such as solar, geothermal, biogas, and industrial waste heat, while as a major buyer of forest and wood-based fibre materials, it now ensures that all wood-fibre materials it acquires are certified through third-party Chain of Custody systems, including FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification).
CDP assessment
CDP, which boasts the world’s largest environmental database, assesses companies worldwide based on their environmental impact reduction efforts, governance, targets, and value chain engagement. In 2024, more than 22,000 companies from 130 countries, representing two-thirds of global market capitalisation, participated in CDP’s evaluation processes.
Under CDP’s ‘Forest’ criteria, Essity was awarded a score of ‘A-‘.
‘[CDP] is widely recognised as the leading benchmark when it comes to ensuring the transparency of companies’ environmental activities,’ Essity said in a statement. Read more here.
