Mondelēz International has outlined its progress against environmental, social, and governance objectives in the UK and Ireland in its latest Snacking Made Right report.
Among the highlights of the report, which outlines how the snacking giant is ‘turning its ambitions on ESG into action’, is a collaboration with Queen’s University Belfast on utilising on-farm technologies to measure and reduce emissions across agricultural production.
Further to this, an EIT Food-funded project, which is also led by Queen’s, is examining the level to which different actions can reduce emissions in dairy farming.
Mondelēz International is also working alongside the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Risk Analysis and Resilience on efforts to strengthen climate risk assessment processes, it noted, converting data into clear, actionable insights that support more resilient operations and supply chains.
Packaging and logistics
The firm also noted sustainability achievements in areas such as packaging and logistics – its Cadbury Dairy Milk sharing bars are now wrapped in 80% certified recycled plastic, it noted, while paper tubs for its Cadbury Heroes range were trialled at Tesco during last year’s festive period.
It is a founding member of – and investor in – the UK’s Flexible Plastic Fund, which will enable kerbside collection, sorting and recycling of flexible plastics from next year.
In logistics, meanwhile, Mondelēz International has extended its partnership with Tesco on the use of double-deck trailers, thereby cutting some 78,000 miles from UK roads and removing around 900 truck journeys.
‘Accelerate progress’
“The UK and Ireland demonstrate how innovation and R&D can accelerate ESG progress,” commented Christian Woolfenden, senior vice president and managing director, Mondelēz International UK&I.
“By combining world-class research with scalable solutions, we are helping to shape a more sustainable future while continuing to create brands people love today and will continue to enjoy for generations.” Read more here.
