Sustainability Reporting World Cup 2026 – And the winner is…

Cartoon orange kitten in a green soccer kit kicks a ball toward the goal in a packed stadium at night, with the title Sustainability Reporting World Cup above.

All good things must come to an end, and the inaugural Sustainability Reporting World Cup, which kicked off on 12 June with 32 teams, has now reached its climax.

With two automotive giants, Ford and BMW Group, in the final, this one went right down to the wire – you could say it went to extra time and penalties, hypothetically at least.

We’re proud to announce that the winner of the Sustainability Reporting World Cup is… over to you, Eco-Cat!

Congratulations to BMW Group!

The Munich powerhouse saw off some tough competition on its way to the final, coming up against LG in the first round, before narrowly edging past Airbus in round two. A quarter final win over Walmart was followed by a victory over close rivals Mercedes-Benz in the semi final – before its win over Ford in the grand final!

Details on the methodology behind the Sustainability Reporting World Cup can be found here.

BMW Group’s sustainability report formed part of its 2025 Group Report, commencing on page 94 – you can find that here.

‘Sets the benchmark’

As our AI-powered reporting analyst said in its assessment, BMW Group “sets the benchmark for ESRS execution, circular economy integration, KPI architecture, lifecycle thinking, and audit-ready disclosure. It is the report most likely to be studied by sustainability professionals designing the next generation of CSRD-compliant reporting.”

Of particular note were the following:

  • Best-in-class technical execution: BMW delivered the most complete and audit-ready sustainability disclosure, setting the benchmark for ESRS implementation, KPI architecture, and assurance readiness.
  • Industry-leading climate and circularity: Its report embedded lifecycle thinking, decarbonisation, and circular economy principles throughout the business rather than treating them as standalone topics.
  • Exceptional report structure: A highly logical flow from strategy to KPIs, materiality, performance, and assurance made the report easy to navigate and exceptionally coherent.
  • Stronger disclosure depth: BMW outperformed Ford across key technical areas including climate, materiality, supply chain, circular economy, KPIs, and overall transparency.
  • Narrow but decisive edge: While Ford excelled in storytelling and business integration, BMW’s superior disclosure maturity and technical rigour secured the overall win by a slim margin.

This was a lot of fun to put together, and we hope to organise another Sustainability Reporting World Cup in due course. And now, back to the football…!
