Animal health and ingredients firm Alltech has announced that it is now ‘more than halfway’ towards achieving its 2030 Scope 1 and 2 emissions reduction target, following a 7.8% reduction in emissions last year.
In its 2024 Sustainability Report, Alltech said that since 2021, it has reduced emissions by 26%, putting it well on the way to achieving its targeted 42% reduction by the end of the decade.
Last year, it also achieved double-digit business growth, ‘proving that strong business performance can go hand in hand with environmental progress’, it noted.
‘Long-term benefits’
“The choices we make today will shape the world of tomorrow,” commented Tara McCarthy, global vice president of ESG at Alltech. “That’s why our sustainability strategy is designed to deliver long-term environmental, social and economic benefits — not only within our own operations but across the entire agri-food value chain.”
Other sustainability achievements announced by the Kentucky-based group include a $2.04 million investment in six energy efficiency and renewable energy projects in 2024, which resulted in a reduction of 3,602 metric tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions.
Since 2021, it has invested $13 million in 40 projects across 29 sites, cutting emissions by about 21,000 metric tonnes annually.
Elsewhere, it expanded its zero-waste-to-landfill practices, with five facilities achieving full zero-waste status in 2024; launched a water stewardship strategy; and completed 57 product life-cycle analyses in 2024, bringing the total number of LCAs the company has undertaken to 139.
World Without Cows
The year also saw the completion of the World Without Cows documentary, which explores the economic, cultural, nutritional and environmental role of cattle, seeking to challenge ‘oversimplified narratives’ about animal agriculture.
Looking ahead, Alltech said that it is ‘committed’ to working alongside its producers and partners to turn challenges linked to climate change, resource scarcity and social inequality into opportunities.
“We are dedicated to addressing these complex issues through ongoing rigorous research, robust data management, strategic partnerships and the development of forward-thinking sustainable solutions,” McCarthy added. “We invite our stakeholders, partners and communities to join us on this journey.” Read more here.
