An Post achieves 50% reduction in carbon emissions, hits target ahead of schedule

Ireland's postal service, An Post, has reported it achieved its targeted 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2025 three months ahead of schedule.

Ireland‘s postal service, An Post, has reported it achieved its targeted 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2025 three months ahead of schedule.

In its 2025 Sustainability Report, An Post said that it achieved a 50% reduction in carbon emissions, compared to 2009 levels, in September 2025. Back in 2017, this carbon emissions target had been set for 2030, however this was revised forward in response to Ireland’s climate goals.

The group achieved the reduction despite continued growth in parcel deliveries and e-commerce operations – parcel volumes increased by 27% last year to 73 million items, with An Post servicing 2.5 million deliver points every working day.

‘Move ahead at pace’

“An Post will continue to be a champion of sustainability whilst leading positive environmental change,” commented David McRedmond, CEO, An Post.

“It’s vital that we are able to move ahead at pace with constructing the e-commerce and postal sorting and delivery infrastructure for the future, to be funded from our own resources, once government approval is received.”

Electrified transport

Transport electrification was a major driver of An Post’s emissions reduction strategy – as of the end of 2025, more than half (55%) of its fleet was powered by alternative fuels, while 575 new, larger EVs have been deployed so far this year.

Elsewhere, 99% of the group’s buildings are now powered by green energy – its headquarters, The EXO in Dublin’s North Wall, saw energy use fall by 250 megawatt hours last year following upgrades to building management systems.

“Our latest Sustainability Report demonstrates how sustainability and commercial success can advance collectively,” added Owen Keogh, head of sustainability, An Post. “With 575 new, larger EVs being deployed in the first half of this year and a tighter focus on green energy optimisation and support for circular economy initiatives, we continue to make great strides towards our Green Light Energy Goals.

“Net zero demands progress with pace and precision. We will continue to drive positive change across our community of customers, suppliers and staff while maximising opportunities for growth in our e-commerce and financial services businesses.” Read more here.
