Flix highlights emissions reduction achieved through ‘collective transport’ model

Transport provider Flix has said that passengers using its services during 2025 avoided an estimated 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂ by choosing coach travel over driving or flying.

The Munich-headquartered firm made the announcement in its latest sustainability report, which outlined how the group’s ‘collective transport’ model – offering coach travel to and from 8,700 destinations worldwide – has significantly reduced the number of private vehicles on the road.

As it noted, an individual riding with FlixBus in Europe emits on average at least five times less CO₂ per km than driving the same route, while on longer journeys, such as between Berlin to Rome, emissions can be reduced by up to 84% compared with private car use.

Compared with domestic air travel, however, the emissions saving can be up to up to 10 times less CO₂ emitted per km.

‘More sustainable choices’

“Everyone should be able to make more sustainable choices,” commented André Schwämmlein, CEO and co-founder of Flix. “Together with our partners, we are committed to increasing our network even further to make affordable collective travel available to more people. Individual actions, multiplied, can drive massive change. Enabling that transformation is our responsibility.”

Flix is also in the process of converting its fleet to lower-carbon alternatives, such as electric vehicles and biofuels – as of last year, around 120 of its coaches featured alternative powertrains, with this number set to increase this year.

It also noted that its network is helping to open up transport access to lower-populated areas – close to a third of the locations it serves have populations below 20,000 and are often not served by rail infrastructure.

Reporting strucure

Flix’s sustainability report was prepared in alignment with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) under the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), and includes more than 200 indicators, covering environmental, social and governance topics, including emissions, energy use and compliance measures.

Also, for the first time, in 2025 Flix obtained independent third-party assurance of its corporate carbon footprint, including Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, ‘reinforcing the company’s commitment to transparency and data reliability in sustainability reporting’, it said. Read more here.
