Honda has achieved a 47.5% reduction in carbon emissions from its corporate activities, compared to 2020 levels, as the Japanese carmaker seeks to achieve net zero by 2050.
In its ESG Report 2025, Honda said that its Saitama production facility, north of Tokyo, is on track to be the company’s first carbon-neutral facility, by full-year 2026, with the technologies and practices employed at the facility set to be rolled out to Honda’s global production sites.
Honda has set a target of achieving carbon-neutral automobile manufacturing across its global operations by the late 2030s.
Other initiatives include utilising surplus heat from its operations, such as in the painting process; the electrification of gas-burning equipment used for drying; the installation of solar panels on buildings and parking lots; and the procurement of renewable energy from external suppliers. As an example, Honda signed a virtual power purchase agreement with wind energy provided Rusutsu Wind LLC in September 2024.
‘Triple Action to ZERO’
To achieve net zero by 2050, Honda plans to step up efforts under its ‘Triple Action to ZERO’ initiative, which is built on three interconnected goals: reaching net zero CO2 emissions, utilising 100% carbon-free energy, and using only sustainable materials.
The company is expanding the range of electric vehicles in its portfolio, preparing for the launch of the new Honda 0 Series in 2026, which utilises a new development approach called ‘Thin, Light and Wise’. In motorcycles, too, Honda continues to expand its electric lineup, with the recent launch of models such as the CUV e: in Indonesia and Activa e: in India, both of which use replaceable battery packs
Allied to this, Honda is also focusing on the efficient use of resources and biodiversity preservation as part of its broader materiality commitments, with initiatives under development including efforts to eliminate industrial water intake and waste at its manufacturing plants by 2050.
Greenhouse gas emissions
In its fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, the company reported total greenhouse gas emissions of 296.86 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, of which Scope 3 emissions accounted for around 99%.
The company’s 2025 emissions output was higher than that of the previous year (278.59 million tonnes) and 2023 (291.77 million tonnes). Read more here.
