The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and Carbon Measures have appointed former Colombian president Iván Duque Márquez as chair of a new advisory group tasked with developing a globally applicable product-level carbon accounting framework.
The Technical Expert Panel (TEP) on Carbon Accounting brings together experts from academia, financial accounting, industry and civil society, and is focused on the development of a framework for carbon emissions accounting that can be applied at a global level.
Climate accounting
“It is a great honour to join the Carbon Measures team and contribute to accelerating the advancement of the highest standards in climate accounting,” commented Iván Duque, chair of the TEP advisory group.
“This will contribute to developing more and better projects, while enhancing transparency in the mobilisation of capital toward decarbonisation.”
The formation of the advisory group will take the TEP’s technical work ‘to the next level’, the ICC said in a statement, and broaden its engagement with policymakers, business leaders, and other stakeholders.
While the TEP’s technical conclusions remain independent, the advisory group will provide external perspectives and strategic input on the relevance and practical application of the proposed framework across different sectors and regions.
Additional members of the advisory group are set to be announced in the coming months.
‘An important step’
“President Duque’s appointment marks an important step for this initiative,” added Andrew Wilson, ICC deputy secretary general. “His leadership and experience will help us build engagement across key stakeholder groups – advancing the wider conversation on the potential utility of a globally consistent product-level carbon accounting regime.”
Duque served as president of Colombia from 2018 to 2022 – a period that saw it commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 51% by 2030, and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Read more here.
