STAX Engineering, Seaboard launch integrated emissions and carbon capture solution

STAX Engineering has teamed up with Seabound to demo a fully integrated emissions and carbon capture solution at the Port of Long Beach in California.

This end-to-end modular solution, which has now completed its trial process, is being earmarked for deployment with Associated British Ports (ABP), and is seen as a significant milestone in tackling emissions and meeting tightening environmental regulations.

California-based STAX Engineering and UK-based Seabound demonstrated their solution during a Carbon Capture Showcase at the port. Connected together on a STAX barge, the modular system successfully filtered and captured harmful pollutants from an at-berth roll-on roll-off (RoRo) vessel from Wallenius Wilhelmsen.

The system successfully filtered out almost all particulate natter and nitrogen oxide, capturing carbon dioxide directly from the vessel’s exhaust.

‘Landmark moment’

“Today marks a landmark moment in our journey toward a zero-emissions future, and it’s just the beginning of a global maritime emissions solution,” commented STAX CEO Mike Walker. “As we expand our carbon capture capabilities across the fleet, our inaugural partnership with Seabound has been instrumental. […] The growing demand from port leaders and our customers reinforces our commitment to leading the maritime sector toward a more sustainable future.”

The maritime industry is facing increased pressure to decarbonise its operations in line with the International Maritime Organization’s 2030 goals, as well as national targets.

Scalable solutions

“Our partnership demonstrates that effective, scalable emissions solutions are a reality that we can implement now,” added Alisha Fredriksson, co-founder and CEO of Seabound. “Our collaboration with STAX proves that by leveraging innovative onboard carbon capture, we can make a tangible difference on a global scale and provide the maritime industry with the tools vital for a sustainable future.”

STAX and Seabound are continuing their partnership at the Port of Southampton in the UK. In March 2025, ABP welcomed STAX and Seabound into its Energy Ventures Accelerator, a programme designed to explore clean energy hardware startups to clean up ABP’s ports nationwide as it works toward net zero by 2040.
