Aldi introduces aluminium wine bottle to UK stores

Retailer Aldi UK has introduced a new alumiumun wine bottle for its Costellore Pinot Grigio brand, which it says will help reduce supply chain emissions and encourage recycling.

Retailer Aldi UK has introduced a new aluminium wine bottle for its Costellore Pinot Grigio brand, which it says will help reduce supply chain emissions and encourage recycling.

The new wine bottle weighs 95 grams, making it 75% lighter than its glass counterpart, with this reduction in weight translating to ‘considerable’ transport savings of five tonnes per truckload, the retailer said.

‘Greener choices’

“Our buying teams are constantly exploring ways to offer greater value and greener choices for our customers,” commented Julie Ashfield, chief commercial officer at Aldi UK. “Shoppers are looking for ways to make a difference, and we’re proud to be leading the way with innovations like this aluminium wine bottle, building on our commitment to sustainable packaging.”

The wine is priced at £5.99 and is going on sale in the discounter’s UK stores from 14 April. It was developed alongside Broadland Drinks, a firm that produces climate-friendly packaging for the drinks industry.

Carbon footprint

“We’re delighted to partner with Aldi on the launch of the aluminium wine bottle,” Catherine Smith, commercial director at Broadland Drinks, added. “This initiative fits perfectly with our ambition to reduce our own carbon footprint and work with our retailers to make their businesses more sustainable.

“We know the biggest factor in a bottle of wine’s carbon footprint is the bottle itself, so by switching from glass to aluminium, we can help meet the rising demand for alternative lower carbon formats.”

The launch of the wine follows on from Aldi being awarded ‘Sustainable Drinks Retailer of the Year’ at The Drinks Retailing Awards. Read more here.
