Carlsberg signs renewable energy PPAs in the Nordics

Brewer Carlsberg Group has announced the signing of long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to supply renewable energy to its facilities across the Nordics.

Carlsberg Group has announced the signing of long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to supply renewable energy to its facilities across the Nordics.

The beer giant’s operations in Norway (Ringnes), Sweden (Carlsberg Sverige), and Finland (Sinebrychoff) will benefit from the PPAs, which were signed with three separate energy suppliers.

‘Accelerate the green transition’

“Securing renewable electricity through Power Purchase Agreements is a cornerstone of our sustainability programme,” commented Torsten Steenholt, EVP integrated supply chain, Carlsberg Group.

“The new PPAs across the Nordics allow us to accelerate the green transition and support the development of additional renewable energy capacity. The three new agreements complement our existing PPAs in, for example, Lithuania, Denmark, and China.”

PPA agreements

In Norway, Carlsberg’s Ringnes brewery will buy 435 GWh over ten years from the Fennefoss hydropower plant, purchasing from the energy provider Å Energi. The offtake is set to commence in January of next year and will run for ten years, gradually scaling up over that period.

In Sweden, Carlsberg Sverige (pictured) will purchase output from the Orken wind farm in Halland, operated by RWE, in a PPA that will run for eight years, commencing in January. It is expected that the PPA will cover 78% of its electricity needs.

Finally, in Finland, its Sinebrychoff business will buy volumes from an onshore wind farm in Paltusmaki, operated by Encavis, again as part of a ten-year agreement, starting in January. The PPA is expected to cover approximately 90% of Sinebrychoff’s electricity’s needs.

With the signing of these three agreements, Carlsberg’s total contracted renewable electricity coverage from PPAs in the Nordics will increase from 10% to 21%. marking ‘a significant step in our efforts to decarbonise our Nordic operations’, the company said.

‘With these agreements, we are actively adding renewable energy capacity to the Nordic region, helping accelerate the transition to clean energy.’ Read more here.
