Chemical firm Chemours has said that its sustainability strategy is ‘delivering tangible results’, as it reported an 80% reduction in air and water process emissions of fluorinated organic chemicals (FOCs) since 2018.
It added that it is ‘on-track’ to achieve a 99% reduction in FOC process emissions by the end of the decade.
In its 2025 Sustainability Report, the Delaware-based firm said that it is making progress on emissions reduction, responsible manufacturing, climate action, safety, supply chain engagement, and community investment, utilising science, technology and operational improvements to advance its agenda.
‘Long-term value’
Noting that the group’s sustainability strategy is also helping to deliver “long-term value for the company and its stakeholders”, Kathy O’Keefe, Chemours chief sustainability officer, said that the report reinforces the company’s commitment.
“The progress reflected in this year’s report demonstrates how responsible manufacturing, operational excellence, and innovation can work together to reduce our environmental footprint, strengthen our business, and help our customers meet their own sustainability goals,” she said.
“While important work remains, the progress highlighted in this report reflects the dedication of our teams and our commitment to turn ambition into action by delivering solutions that support our customers, communities, and other stakeholders.”
Emissions reduction
Other achievements highlighted in the report include a reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 57% from 2018 levels, along with an absolute reduction in Scope 3 emissions over the same period, supported by the adoption of its Opteon low global warming potential refrigerants.
Elsewhere, Chemours recorded zero Tier 1 process safety events and zero distribution safety incidents over the course of last year, and launched its ‘We Strive for Zero’ safety aspiration, establishing a clearer, enterprise-wide vision for safety performance.
The report also highlighted the work that Chemours is undertaking in detecting, measuring and reducing emissions, efforts that ‘support one of the world’s most ambitious fluorinated organic compound reduction goals while helping drive broader progress across industry’. Read more here.
