The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has topped the annual Sustainable Circuits Index (SCI), which ranks the world’s most sustainable motorsports circuits, for the second consecutive year.
The SCI, which is carried out by Enovation Consulting in collaboration with Professor Paolo Taticchi of UCL School of Management, analyses 115 international circuits, both permanent and temporary, on their progress in sustainability and their contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Biodiversity actions
The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya topped the rankings – ahead of Italy’s Mugello in second place and the UK’s Silverstone in third – with the report citing a range of biodiversity initiatives as one of the most ‘notable actions’ implemented over the past year.
The circuit has introduced new measures in the woodland area of the venue, including planting 200 new trees, installing interpretative signage featuring QR codes, and introducing biodiversity workshops held during Grand Prix events.
Renewable energy
Elsewhere, the circuit continues to source its electricity from a 100% renewable grid, powered by more than 2,300 photovoltaic panels. During Grand Prix events, temporary generators used by the circuit are powered by HVO instead of fossil fuels.
The report also recognises the venue’s community programmes – including initiatives such as Cheers4U, Mou-te, La Marató de 3Cat and the GP Fundació Isidre Esteve – as well as acknowledging its FIA 3-Star Environmental Accreditation and ISO 14001 and ISO 20121 certifications covering environmental management and sustainable event organisation.
‘The study recognises the [Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya’s] ongoing commitment to its comprehensive sustainability strategy, which is integrated into the day-to-day management of the facility and the organisation of its major sporting events,’ the report noted. Read more here and here.
