Registrations of new battery-electric passenger cars increased by close to a third in the EU last year

Some 1.87 million battery-electric passenger cars were registered across the European Union in 2025, representing an increase of close to a third (29.7%) on the previous year, according to new data from Eurostat.

This growth follows on from a 6.0% decline in battery-electric car registrations the previous year, when some 1.46 million new BEVs entered the market.

As a result of last year’s increase, the total number of battery electric passenger cars on EU roads has now reached 7.59 million in 2025, up 31.5% from 5.77 million vehicles at the end of 2024.

Registrations of plug-in hybrid cars showed significant growth last year, rising by 34.2% to reach a total of 1.03 million vehicles.

Elsewhere, non-plug-in hybrid vehicles, which remained the most popular powertrain among consumers with a total of 3.62 million registrations, saw a 13.4% increase last year.

By contrast, registrations of traditional internal combustion engine vehicles continued to decline last year, with new diesel passenger car registrations falling by 22% to 1.07 million vehicles, while new petrol car registrations decreased by 18.4% to 2.98 million.

‘The highest share of hybrid and battery-only electric cars together (i.e ‘electrified cars’) in the EU was recorded in Luxembourg (24%), followed by Denmark (22%), and Belgium and Sweden (both 20%),’ Eurostat noted. Read more here.
