The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has announced the granting of a €35 million loan to GreenWay, one of Europe’s largest EV charging operators.
The loan forms part of a broader €113 million financing package, which will enable GreenWay to develop, construct and install 2,700 fast and ultra-fast public EV charging points across Poland, the Slovak Republic and Croatia over the next two years.
These new charging locations will be situated in densely populated and high-traffic locations, with the aim of improving access to charging infrastructure and supporting cross-border sustainable transport via electric vehicles.
Electric mobility infrastructure
‘Central Europe has significantly less electric mobility infrastructure than other regions in the European Union (EU),’ the EBRD said in a statement. ‘Expanding the charging network is therefore crucial to encourage wider adoption of electric vehicles and achieving both national and EU-wide climate objectives. All electricity procured by GreenWay is sourced from renewable energy, ensuring that the expansion of charging infrastructure delivers clear carbon savings.’
The EBRD is a leading implementing partner for the InvestEU programme, which has been developed to mobilise sustainable investment and support innovation and job creation across EU member states. Between 2022 and 2027, guarantees under the InvestEU programme, worth around €777 million, are expected to be leveraged by the EBRD to finance investments of up to €3.8 billion across relevant sectors in the bloc.
Public charging
Headquartered in Poland, GreenWay operates more than 3,000 public charging points across Poland, Slovakia and Croatia, and is one of the fastest-growing providers in the CEE region, aiming to ‘increase this number significantly to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility and green transport across the region,’ the EBRD noted.
Overall, the EBRD has invested more than €25 billion in Croatia, Poland and the Slovak Republic, largely in the private sector. Read more here.
