Honda ups focus on hybrid vehicles, reaffirms commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050

Honda has announced a 'realignment' of its product launch plans for its motorcycle, automobile, and power products businesses, while also reaffirming its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Honda has announced a ‘realignment’ of its product launch plans for its motorcycle, automobile, and power products businesses, while also reaffirming its commitment to achieving net zero by 2050.

The Japanese firm said that in response to changing market conditions, evolving customer demand and the shifting mobility landscape, it has made the decision to ‘reallocate development and production resources, with a near-term focus on hybrid vehicles, which are experiencing strong demand’.

Honda said the revised strategy is intended to ensure the company remains on course to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 while maintaining business competitiveness.

Responding to the market

‘We have taken into account the trade-offs between accelerating CO2 reductions through electrification and responding to the market environment,’ it said.

Beyond product emissions, Honda is working to reduce emissions from its own operations through improved manufacturing efficiency, electrification of production equipment and greater use of renewable energy. It plans to increase its collaboration with suppliers and other related partners to cut emissions across the entire product lifecycle, including raw material sourcing, manufacturing, logistics, product use and end-of-life recycling.

‘Taking into account region-specific market environments and demand trends, we will accelerate a multi-faceted approach to achieving carbon neutrality by combining EVs, hybrid vehicles, carbon-neutral fuels, and carbon offset technologies,’ Honda noted.

Net-zero ambitions

Honda said that it has introduced new environmental performance indicators and management targets designed to support its net-zero ambitions. It has also made changes to its corporate governance structure, as it seeks to strengthen decision-making processes, improve transparency and ensure more effective execution of business strategy.

‘Recognising that achieving the envisioned 2050 goals requires more than just in-house business areas and technology development, Honda is collaborating with partners in fields outside its current business scope,’ it added.

Elsewhere, the company highlighted climate-related physical risks to its manufacturing operations, referencing flood exposure at its vehicle assembly plants in India, Thailand, Vietnam and Mexico. Read more here.
