The Ellen MacArthur Foundation has announced the appointment of Jonquil Hackenberg as its new chief executive, commencing 4 November.
Hackenberg, who currently holds the position of CEO of Eunomia Research & Consulting, a social-environmental consultancy and research house, replaces Andrew Morlet in the role, who is stepping down following a ten-year tenure.
Hackenberg also previously served as Global Head of Sustainability and Climate Response at PA Consulting, as well as a 13-year stint with Infosys, latterly holding the position of Global Head of Sustainable Business.
Circular economy focus
‘I am absolutely thrilled to be stepping into the role of CEO at the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, an organisation I’ve long admired for its ground-breaking work in the circular economy,” Hackenberg commented. “I have spent the best part of my career working to ensure circularity, climate response, and sustainability are at the forefront of business strategy. I couldn’t be more excited to lead the Foundation at such a critical moment.
“The shift to a regenerative, circular economy is no longer just a vision — it’s happening. Andrew has built an exceptional organisation and I look forward to working alongside inspiring individuals, partners, and changemakers to accelerate this transition, and together build a future in which business, society, and nature thrive.”
Hackenberg’s first responsibility will be at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2025, where she will be joined by founder Dame Ellen MacArthur and the Foundation’s team to promote their mission of driving systemic change toward a circular economy, further amplifying their global influence.
‘A strong and charismatic leader’
Commenting on her appointment, MacArthur said, “She [Hackenberg] is a strong and charismatic leader with a proven track record of engaging diverse organisations in driving systems change across industries. Her passion for developing people, along with a talent for building partnerships that accelerate impact, makes her the perfect person to lead us forward.”
Morlet was appointed CEO in 2014, and during his tenure, the Foundation raised over £150 million in project funding and helped mobilise £350 billion in circular economy investment. Today, the Foundation operates with a team of more than 200 people, with offices in the UK, Brazil, Belgium, China, and the United States.
