Danish renewables producer Vestas has said that its new wind turbine increases annual energy production by up to 6%, depending on site conditions, while also boasting lower operating costs.
The new V182-7.2 MW wind turbine, which is built on its EnVentus platform, can ‘deliver enhanced energy production when it is needed the most’, amidst changing market and grid conditions.
The turbine, which uses a a larger rotor, has a specific rating of 277 W/m², giving it a larger rotor-to-rating ratio than its predecessor. According to the company, this can increase the turbine’s capacity factor by up to 2%, allowing it to generate a greater share of its electricity at lower wind speeds.
Periods of lower wind typically coincide with higher electricity prices, with Vestas estimating that its new turbine can improve capture prices by up to 3%.
‘High-performance output’
“The V182-7.2 MW is designed to deliver consistent, high-performance output that supports strong project economics and long-term bankability for our customers in an evolving energy environment, where predictability and financial resilience are critical to project success,” commented Felix Henseler, Vestas‘ chief technology and operations officer (CTOO).
“Built on the proven EnVentus platform, this turbine reinforces our commitment to continuous platform evolution through targeted design enhancements that create meaningful customer value while maintaining the reliability of a validated platform.’
“The V182-7.2 MW also underlines our ability to efficiently scale competitive solutions that enable us to deliver affordable, secure and sustainable energy to communities across the globe.”
Market volatility
The design is also intended to support renewable energy projects operating under grid constraints and electricity market volatility, it added. Vestas said that the new turbine is ‘particularly well suited’ to low-to-medium wind sites across Europe, Australia, South Africa, North America and South America.
Its EnVentus platform is already installed in more than 25 countries, and boasts more than 5 GW of installed capacity globally.
“The V182-7.2 MW also underlines our ability to efficiently scale competitive solutions that enable us to deliver affordable, secure and sustainable energy to communities across the globe,” Henseler added. Read more here.
